Documentation on Tree Planting for Cooking Energy

In August 2007, a survey on family tree planting for wood energy was conducted by a student internship Ms. Tith Janneth (a participant in 14th generation Apprenticeship program organized by CEDAC) with supervision of Wood Energy Network of Cambodia (WENetCam). This study is a part of her final assignment in this program.

The survey was carried out in 2 target provinces, Prey Veng and Takeo, where CEDAC is operating ILFARM and SRL projects. The study was documented the case of 24 farmer families that planted trees in their homestead. It looked closely at the number and species of tree that farmers planted for firewood, and tree planting and harvesting techniques that farmers have practiced to maximize wood yield and to sustain firewood harvesting.

The study shows that most farmers planted fast growing tree species like Cassia Siemensis, neem tree, Sesbania grandiflora along fence and homestead plot. Generally, a family with 6-7 members that has around 1000 trees can supply enough firewood. They also use leaves for other purposes such as green manure and vegetable.
